Maduro praises Lula after president says he will not question Venezuela’s justice system

The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, stated on Monday (11) that the Brazilian head of state, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), made a “wise reflection” on the affirm that it cannot question the Supreme Court of Venezuela.

“I have been watching [as declarações de Lula] This morning, I thought it was really good. I agree with Lula. Each country has to find a way to resolve its issues, its conflicts, its problems. Brazil with its institutions and its national, sovereign dynamics and Venezuela with our institutions and our sovereign dynamics”, expressed the chavista.

Maduro said he considered the Brazilian president’s speech to be “wise”. “I think it was a wise reflection by Lula, I could say: a point in Lula’s favor”, he praised.

The Venezuelan president’s statements refer to the interview broadcast this Sunday by RedeTV, in which Lula stated that he could not question the Venezuelan Supreme Court of Justice, which ratified Maduro’s supposed victory in the July 28 presidential elections.

“I don’t have the right to question another country’s Supreme Court, because I don’t want any country to question my Supreme Court, even when it makes mistakes. Even when she does what she did to me by not letting me be a candidate in 2018”, expressed the Brazilian president.

In the interview, Lula also pointed out that “Maduro is a problem for Venezuela, not Brazil”.

He cited the joint note with Colombia, in which both countries stated that the credibility of the Venezuelan electoral process can only be reestablished through the transparent publication of detailed and verifiable data.

“He [Maduro] He should have sent the note to the National Electoral Council, which he created (…) he didn’t show it, it went straight to the Supreme Court”, he commented.

“I want Venezuela to live well, for them to take care of their people with dignity, and I will take care of Brazil. Maduro takes care of them, the Venezuelan people take care of Maduro, I take care of Brazil and we will move forward”, added Lula.

Maduro’s statements in approval of Lula’s stance on Venezuela come after a diplomatic crisis between the countries — Brazil vetoed the neighboring country’s entry into the Brics, the bloc of emerging nations.

After several statements by Venezuelan authorities with accusations against Itamaraty and Celso Amorim, Lula’s special advisor for international affairs, the Bolivarian National Police published on their social networks a montage with a blurred image of the PT member, in front of the Brazilian flag, with the statement “Anyone who messes with Venezuela will be in trouble.”

After publication, Itamaraty, which was avoiding responding to the provocations of Maduro and his cabinet, stated in a statement that the Brazilian government considered the statements by Venezuelan authorities in relation to Brazil and national symbols “offensive”.

The note from the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlights that the neighboring country’s government opted for “personal attacks and rhetorical escalations, replacing political and diplomatic channels”, and that Venezuela’s actions do not correspond to the “respectful way” in which Brazil treats the country and Venezuelans.
