Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro responded on Wednesday (17) to the United States for not renewing a license that had largely eased oil sanctions on Venezuela, saying that his country was not a “foreign colony”.
“They think that this scares us, there is no sanction, there is no threat that today would harm the effort to build a new productive economic model,” Maduro added.
Washington has repeatedly threatened in recent months to reimpose energy sanctions, which expire this Thursday (18), if Maduro did not fulfill promises that led to partial relief from US sanctions in October following a US-backed election deal between the government and the Venezuelan opposition.
While Maduro fulfilled some commitments from last year's deal, he failed to meet others, including allowing the opposition to run the candidate of its choice against him in the July 28 presidential election, senior U.S. officials said.
