Maduro retreated from the crisis with Guyana for fear of being isolated, diplomats say

The dictator of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, “modified” his speech in relation to Guyana for fear of being isolated in the region. This is the assessment of Brazilian diplomats interviewed by CNN.

The risk of Venezuela’s segregation became clear after Brazil suggested mentioning the tension between the two countries at the Mercosur meeting, calling for a peaceful solution in the two countries’ dispute over the Essequibo region, which is in Guyana.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also made clear his discomfort by directing the Army to reinforce troops in the region and telling allies that he would break politically with Maduro in the event of a war.

Earlier, in an interview with CNN, the special advisor to the Presidency, Celso Amorim, said that negotiations between Venezuela and Guyana exceeded expectations because both renounced the threat of the use of force, containing the escalation of tension in the region.

“I’ve been saying it would be a victory if they would just accept a new meeting. We went much further than that because Venezuela and Guyana renounced the threat of the use of force”, stated Amorim.
