Nicolás Maduro’s vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, said this Wednesday (30) that Brazil’s veto of her country’s entry into the Brics, a bloc of emerging countries, “demonstrates a deep envy of Venezuela”.
“What Brazil did only demonstrates a deep envy of Venezuela because they believe that we can be competition, instead of understanding ourselves as what we are, countries that are in the same region, how we can add our complementarities, our powers to boost our region” , said Rodríguez.
The Venezuelan vice president also accused Brazil’s Foreign Minister, Mauro Vieira, of “lying” to her, to the Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Yván Gil, and to Nicolás Maduro.
This Monday (28), Maduro stated that Vieira, who personally represented Lula at the Brics summit, personally told him that his country would not be vetoed from the bloc. The Chavista even said that the Brazilian chancellor “almost fainted” when he saw him at the end of the event and that he confronted him, and that Vieira had said that he did not veto Venezuela.
“He thought he was doing harm to Venezuela,” said Rodríguez, alleging that Vieira violated article 4 of the Brazilian Constitution “which orders his government to establish and promote relations of integration and regional union.”
The Chavista representative also stated that “Itamaraty’s low position will be marked in history as a vile aggression against the Venezuelan people”.
This Wednesday (30), Venezuela recalled its ambassador in Brasília, Manuel Vadell, for consultations, in protest against statements by Celso Amorim, advisor to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for international affairs, which he described as “interventionist and rude”.
The Maduro government also summoned Brazil’s chargé d’affaires in Caracas, Breno Hermann, to express its rejection. The statement released this Wednesday by Caracas states that Amorim behaves as a “messenger of North American imperialism” and that he has dedicated himself to “issuing value judgments on processes that correspond only to Venezuelans and Venezuelans”.
At the same time, the president of the Venezuelan Legislature, Jorge Rodríguez, published a four-page statement questioning Amorim’s behavior and stating that he will ask deputies to declare him persona non grata in the country.
