We know how touchy Hollywood is, even if, in the case of Masterthe new film directed by and starring Bradley Cooper, it seems to be bordering on the ridiculous. In fact, it is not the adaptation of the conductor’s life that ends up at the center of the controversy Leonard Bernsteinbut a detail on which many would not even pay attention, that is Cooper’s nose. For script requirements, the actor has, in fact, decided to have a prosthetic applied to his nose in order to make it longer and more pointed, exactly like Bernstein’s. A detail which, however, did not please – and it seemed to you – to several users on social networks who, after seeing the trailer of MasterThat will be previewed at the Venice Film Festival and then be available on Netflix on December 20, have seen fit to accuse Bradley Cooper of anti-Semitism.
According to some, the fact of exaggerating the nose of the protagonist, who was Jewish, does nothing but reinforce a racist stereotype which Cooper could have avoided, not to mention another criticism: that of casting a non-Jewish actor in the role of a Jew. Pointing out Bernstein’s Jewish origins through the nose was deemed inappropriate if not downright offensive, also considering that Cooper is very similar to the original Bernstein and would not have needed further artificial corrections to look like him. On the subject of not having a Jewish actor cast in the lead role – shouldn’t it be an actor’s job to step into roles other than their own? -, Hollywood is certainly not new.
It happened, for example, also to Felicity Joneswho is not Jewish, called to interpret Ruth Bader Ginsburg, judge of the American Supreme Court, in the film A just cause of 2018. Despite the fuss we are sure that Masterwhich focuses on the life of Bernstein and his relationship with his wife played by Carey Mulliganface his figure for the story woven by Cooper and for the emotions he will be able to arouse in the public, and not for the protagonist’s nose.
