Magnitude 6.3 earthquake hits Taiwan

More than 80 earthquakes, the strongest measuring 6.3, hit Taiwan's east coast between Monday night (22) and the early hours of Tuesday (23) local time, the meteorological administration said. of the island.

The tremors occurred in the predominantly rural Hualien County, where on April 3 at least 14 people died after a magnitude 7.2 tremor.

Taiwan has been rocked by hundreds of aftershocks since then, and some buildings in the capital Taipei have been hit.

The Hualien fire department said on Tuesday morning that a hotel that had already been damaged on April 3 and was no longer in operation was now tilted slightly to the side.

However, there were no reports of casualties.

Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes.

More than 100 people died in an earthquake in southern Taiwan in 2016, while a 7.3 magnitude earthquake killed more than 2,000 people in 1999.
