Magnus Carlsen wins first-ever NFT trophy in chess history

Chess player Magnus Carlsen received the NFT trophy for winning the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour. A copy of the prize was sold to a fan at auction for 6.88 ETH.

Norwegian grandmaster Magnus Carlsen
was awarded an NFT prize for winning the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour (MCCT). NFT trophies and collectibles were minted for the award, capturing the best moments of the game.

“NFTs help our chess community celebrate important events and are a great reward for those who have given a lot to the game. The Meltwater Champions Chess Tour is just the beginning, I look forward to continuing, ”he said.

Two identical versions of the NFT Champion’s Trophy were created on the Ethereum blockchain. Carlsen digitally signed each of them after winning the tournament. The first version was received by the winner, the second was auctioned for 6.88 ETH, $ 24,848.

The grandmaster believes cryptocurrency is a great way to support virtual chess tournaments. He recalled the recent partnership of MCCT with the FTX crypto exchange. Thanks to the support of this exchange, professional chess players could compete for a prize pool of 2.1825 (BTC).

The Alliance of Sports and NFT is growing in popularity: In September, French startup Sorare, which developed the eponymous NFT trading platform, raised $ 680 million in a Series B funding round.
