The London Fire Brigade today declared a “major incident” in response to the outbreak of fires amid record-breaking heatwaves across Britain and Europe.
A major incident is defined as an event or situation with a series of serious consequences that requires the implementation of special arrangements by one or more emergency response services.
The London Fire Brigade has announced that it has deployed dozens of fire engines to tackle several fires in and around the city.
“Firefighters are still addressing the needs of our communities, but declaring a major incident allows us to focus our resources,” the agency said.
“This is critical: London Fire Service is under huge pressure. Please stay safe,” Khan said on Twitter, referring to the fire service, as temperatures around London topped 40C amid the heat wave.
Around 100 firefighters and 15 fire engines have been deployed this afternoon to tackle a blaze raging in a village east of London, the fire service said.
According to footage taken from a Sky News helicopter, the fire is sweeping through swathes of vegetation and has destroyed several houses in the village of Wennington, about 30km from central London.
