Major space success for China: Landed robot on Mars

THE China managed to land on its surface today planet Mars Zhurong christened remote-controlled robot, an unprecedented success for any country in Asia, is broadcast by state media, citing the Chinese National Space Agency.

Landing on the red planet is an extremely complex task. Many European, Soviet and American missions to this end have failed in the past.

China had already attempted to send a research robot to Mars in 2011, a joint mission with Russia. After its failure, Beijing decided to continue the adventure alone.

The Chinese Space Agency launched the Tianwen-1 unmanned mission from Earth on July 23, 2020, as the spacecraft sent into space is called.

It consisted of three elements: the main part of the spacecraft that will remain in orbit around Mars, the part that landed and, inside it, the remote-controlled robot Zhurong.

“The Tianwen-1 spacecraft successfully landed in the predetermined zone” of Mars with the Zhurong robot, broadcast the state television network CCTV and according to the APE-MPE clarified that a signal was received on Earth.

The landing took place in an area of the red planet called Utopia Planitia, a vast valley in the northern hemisphere of Mars.

For the Chinese, this is the first independent space exploration effort. They have ambitious plans, they hope to achieve everything the Americans have accomplished, who have made several missions to Mars since the 1960s.

In February, China had succeeded in launching Tianwen-1 into orbit around Mars and began sending snapshots and other material from the red planet to be studied by scientists.

Early today, he managed to land the part that carried the small Zhurong robot, which was able to come out, to the surface.

The successful completion of all three phases of the maiden mission to Mars is a world first.

Weighing more than 200 kg, the Zhurong is equipped with four photovoltaic panels to ensure its power supply. It will be operational for three months.

It also has cameras, radar and lasers, which will allow to study its environment and analyze the composition of Mars rocks.

The name Zhurong refers to the god of fire in Chinese mythology. The symbolism is justified by the Chinese name of Mars, Huoxing, “the planet of fire”.
