A few days ago, on April 1, the Russian-made film Major Thunder: The Plague Doctor from Bubble Studios was released. It is worth noting that this is the first full-length film (running time was 137 minutes) in this comic book universe, but apparently it was not destined to achieve success. Based on the information of the analytical agency UAIS, in the first weekend the film grossed only 103 million rubles at the box office, which by modern standards, even taking into account the pandemic, is a rather bad start. And this is taking into account the lack of a tight release schedule in this period or serious competition in this genre at the moment.
Initially, film market analysts reported that, thanks to a fairly extensive advertising campaign, at the worst start, a film should raise about 200 million over the weekend. But, unfortunately, we managed to collect only half of this amount. In addition, you need to understand that the approximate budget of the film “Major Thunder: The Plague Doctor” is 600 million rubles – the authors of the project are in no hurry to give exact figures, but there is information on the network from insiders that they spent about $ 5 million on filming. Also, about half of this amount was spent on the PR campaign of the new project, which, however, is the norm for modern cinema.
With such a low start, it will be quite difficult for the distributor to at least recoup the costs of production and advertising of the film. Perhaps the film could have reached zero after a period of time, but Mortal Kombat (release in cinemas on April 8) and Chernobyl (launch on April 15) are already looming on the horizon. And the film “Godzilla vs. Kong”, on which no one initially bet, began to actively conquer the audience – in two weeks in Russia the novelty has already collected more than 700 million rubles.
