German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is expected to deliver a keynote speech on a major shift in EU policy during his visit to Prague today.
His speech, part of his first visit to the Czech Republic as head of the German government, will address an “EU turning point” and its implications for the European bloc, officials said ahead of his speech.
Scholz had used the expression “turning point” earlier in February to refer to the impact of Russia’s attack on Ukraine and the resulting shift in German foreign and security policy.
Soltz is expected to deliver a 60-minute speech in the historic main building of Charles University, which was founded in 1348 and is one of the oldest in Europe. And his predecessor in chancellor Angela Merkel had given a speech there in 2008.
Solz is then scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Petr Fiala. Their talks are expected to focus on European energy policy, visa restrictions for Russian tourists and arms deliveries to Ukraine.
The Czech Republic took over the rotating presidency of the EU on 1 July. A council of foreign ministers is expected to be held tomorrow, Tuesday, and the day after tomorrow, Wednesday, and an EU summit is planned to be held in the Czech Republic in early October.
