Majorca: Residents fed up with “alcohol tourism”

Her local community is upset Majorca after the disclosure of the Spanish Media reports that a 45-year-old mother of Irish origin was arrested, who left her minor daughter with a couple she met at the hotel she was staying in every day in order to go out and get drunk.

In the Spanish island this type of tourism has now become known as “as tourism of alcohol” and both the residents and the businessmen estimate that the situation has reached an impasse and that it is worse than any other season. They ask the local, but also the central government to take measures.

More specifically, hoteliers’ association AHPP, gastronomy association CAEB and Mallorca’s nightclub association ABONE have jointly sounded the alarm that the situation has become “unsustainable” and “alarming”. They are demanding tougher penalties, increased police presence and more checks from the authorities.

After Barcelona and Madrid the most “high-end” tourists

Majorca boasts that it is the 3rd most visited region in Spain for “high-end” tourists and that already in April, almost 1.5 million visitors from abroad and mainland Spain went to the Balearic Islands, a record attendance. Almost 40% of foreign tourists were German.

However, residents and bar owners, as well as some visitors, are disturbed by the uncontrollably drunken tourists. In Majorca, although new rules of conduct and legislation have already been introduced three years ago, nothing deters visitors who want to drink until… final drop.

Officially, Playa de Palma is one of the zones where special rules of behavior apply in Mallorca in the summer. The aim is to limit alcohol consumption, for example by regulating sales and banning advertising. “It is to be expected that this year we will face the same problems”says José Antonio Fernández de Alarcon, head of the hotel association of Playa de Palma.

Undoubtedly, part of this tourism is the economic factor as they fill the coffers of the shops and also of many shops in Mallorca. However, since this tourism is mainly interested in alcohol consumption, the shops in the area adapt to the needs. Almost all shops sell alcohol. The food is not… particularly interesting.

In addition, due to inflation, prices are sky high, with overnight stays in four and five star hotels starting at 200 euros, many tourists, especially from Germany and the Netherlands, choose to spend the night on the beach and this gives even more dimension to the problem faced by local authorities.
