Malawi Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima and nine other people aboard a missing military plane have died, President Lazarus Chakwera said on Tuesday (11).
The aircraft carrying Chilima, 51, left the capital Lilongwe on Monday morning, but was unable to land at Mzuzu airport as planned due to poor visibility.
He was ordered to return to the capital, but he fell off the radar and authorities were unable to contact him.
“I am deeply saddened, I regret to inform everyone that this has become a terrible tragedy. The search and rescue team found the aircraft near a hill… they found it completely destroyed with no survivors,” Chakwera said.
Chakwera said in an address to the nation that the site of the accident was in a mountainous part of the Chikangawa Forest.
Chilima, seen as a potential candidate for next year’s presidential elections, was arrested in 2022 on corruption charges.
However, a Malawian court dropped the charges against him last month after the director of public prosecutions served notice to have the case dropped. Chilima denied any wrongdoing.
