Among those arrested were three Malaysians and four foreigners. All were remanded in custody pending the examination of the electricity theft case. During the special operation in the provinces of Bandar Baru, Salak Tinggi and Tuman Putra Perdana, police confiscated 52 “mining rigs” and “other electronic devices” worth 250,000 ringgit ($57,000).
“All those arrested are suspected of illegal bitcoin mining and electricity theft,” Sepang District Police Chief Wan Kamarul said.
Under the current Electricity Act, suspects face a fine of up to RM100,000 ($23,000) and/or a prison term of up to five years.
Earlier, Malaysian Energy Minister Akmal Nasrullah said that illegal miners cheated electricity meters from 2018 to 2023 and caused damage to the national energy sector in the amount of about 3.2 billion ringgit ($722 million).
