Male unemployment shoots up 20% while in women it falls almost at the same rate

The economic crisis derived from the health pandemic caused by Covid-19 is affecting men with greater virulence in terms of the labor market. At least, this is clear from the detailed statistics published by the Ministry of Sustainable Economy regarding the latest data from the Active Population Survey (EPA) corresponding to the fourth quarter of 2020. The data are conclusive: male unemployment has skyrocketed by 20% in the province of Castellón during the last year and, in addition, 8,000 jobs that were held by men have been destroyed.

Meanwhile, the EPA shows that at the end of 2020 there were more women working in the province of Castellón than a year before, with an upturn in female employment of 4.5%. Also, the number of unemployed women has decreased at a rate of two digits, until you are in a drop of the 18,5%, This shows that women have concentrated the fall in unemployment set by the EPA for Castellón.

In this sense, it should be remembered that Castellón closed 2020 with a total of 39,400 unemployed, 1,100 less than a year ago, and 239,700 employed persons, 3,100 less than in 2019. That is, unemployment was reduced despite the destruction of jobs. Now we see that this drop in unemployment is due exclusively to the good evolution registered in the group of women. Despite this, not even the fact that employment grew among women has been able to offset the sharp decline in employed men, with 8,000 fewer workers at the end of the fourth quarter of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019.

For this reason, employment continued to decline in Castellón as a result of the consequences of the health pandemic in the economy, but unemployment data show that the Castellón regions ‘saved’ the end of the year with a decrease in the number of unemployed compared to the third quarter of 2020, with 2,100 fewer unemployed, as well as in the last 12 months, a period in which 1,100 people came out of unemployment, according to the EPA.

Disparity

The regional secretary of Employment and general director of Labora (Valencian Employment and Training Service), Enric Nomdedà © u, recognizes the disparity that exists between the evolution of female and male employment shown by the EPA for the fourth quarter and explains that a response it can be found in the evolution of each of the economic sectors during this period.  «The biggest drop in employment in interannual rate has been registered in agriculture, with 2,300 employed less in the province of Castellón, and in this sector employment is very masculinized », reported Nomdedà © u.

In the same vein, the construction has also lost busy (-300), like industry (-1,000) in the fourth quarter of 2020 compared to the same period of the previous year, the regional secretary of employment adds.

In fact, the sector services is the only one that adds busy with a 500 increase.  «In the last quarter, sectors such as commerce, where there is more female employment, increased hiring due to the christmas campaign », points out Nomdedà © u.

The province of Castellón closed 2020 with a total of 127,500 employed men, 5.9% less than in the fourth quarter of 2019, when there were 135,500, according to the EPA. Male unemployment rose by 20.2% to a total of 19,900 men unemployed.

In the case of women, the fourth quarter of 2020 closed with a total of 112,100 employed persons, 4.5% more, which in absolute rate represents an increase of 4,900 women working more than a year ago. For its part, female unemployment fell by 4,400 women, 4.4% less than in 2019, so the EPA places the number of women unemployed in a total of 19,500 at the end of 2020.

Despite the good evolution of female employment in the final stretch of 2020, global data continue to show worse results for women. The unemployment rate among women stands at 14.8% in the province of Castellón compared to 13.5% of the unemployment rate among men, and that despite having reduced the female rate by 3.4 percentage points while the male rate has risen by 2.6 percentage points.

The Activity rate it is also lowest among the women, with 53.8% compared to 62.3% of men in the province of Castellón. Both the female and male activity rates fell, specifically by 0.3% in the case of women and 2.5% in the case of men.
