The junta, which rules Mali, today dismantled “political parties and political organizations”, as stated in the Presidential Decree read by state television. The opposition has been waiting for many weeks that the military junta would make this move. It is another restriction on the freedoms imposed by the military, who seized power with two coups in 2020 and 2021. Earlier today, the transmission of the French television channel TV5 Monde, who was also charged with a “lack of impartiality”, was also suspended. On May 3, the parties organized a demonstration in the capital, with the participation of several hundred people, in a rare act of disobedience against the regime.
