Mali: The junta passed a new election law

The military government that took power in a coup in Mali (August 2020) passed a new election law on Friday, one step closer to calling elections amid regional pressure to restore democracy in the African country.

Mali has been harshly fined by the West African Economic and Monetary Union (ECOWAS) for its prolonged military takeover.

Mali and the 15-member ECOWAS are arguing over the timeline proposed by the coup leaders for holding elections – they initially proposed five and then two years – as ECOWAS demands their acceleration.

The Mali junta issued a decree on June 6, setting a two-year timetable for March 2022, while negotiations with ECOWAS continue.

The West African Economic and Monetary Union (IMU) has expressed regret over the decision and said it would continue to work with the military government to achieve a “mutually agreed timetable”.

The leaders of the ECOWAS member states will reconsider the issue at a summit expected by 3 July.
