Malta will return to the mandatory use of the mask abroad and at home from Saturday, it was announced today by the Minister of Health Chris Fern.
The measure is taken for precautionary reasons, in order to prevent the possibility of a large increase in cases of COVID-19, although the Mediterranean island has not yet recorded cases of the Omicron variant.
“We have seen that the masks, as well as the booster doses, are effective in preventing the virus, including the Omicron variant,” the Maltese health minister told reporters.
He added that boosting had been postponed earlier and that citizens would be eligible for the vaccine four months after their second dose, instead of six months, as has been the case to date.
Children aged 5 to 11 will start getting their vaccines on Tuesday.
Malta recorded 81 cases of COVID-19 today, with 26 patients in need of treatment.
As Fern stressed, the situation is under control and the government does not intend to introduce additional restrictive measures, as long as everyone is showing responsibility.
