A Maltese-flagged cargo ship was hit by a missile while sailing north of the Red Sea, this Tuesday (16).
A security company and two sources from Greece's Marine Ministry told Reuters the vessel was 76 nautical miles (about 140 km) from the port of Saleef on the coast of Yemen.
The Greek-owned bulk carrier “Zografia” was traveling from Vietnam to Israel with 24 crew members on board and was empty when it was attacked, one of the Greek sources said.
“There were no injuries, just material damage,” the source added.
British maritime security firm Ambrey mentioned the attack in an advisory note on Tuesday.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations Oversight Center (UKMTO) also said it had received a report of an incident about 100 nautical miles (about 185 km) northwest of Saleef.
The Iran-aligned Houthis are threatening to expand the range of targets for their attacks in the Red Sea – which they say are a response to Israel's bombing of Gaza – to include US ships in response to American and British attacks on sites in Yemen.
It was observed that the bulk carrier changed course to port.
Houthi attacks on ships in the region since November have affected international trade and alarmed major powers.
In addition to disrupting supply chains, there are fears that the attacks could make it more difficult to maintain control over global inflation.
