Independent investigation into the murder of the journalist Daphne Caruana Galicia concluded that its then government Malta is responsible for the crime, as it had created a “culture of impunity”.
According to Reuters, Caruana Galicia was killed by a powerful explosion in her car while leaving her home on October 16, 2017, and prosecutors believe that the big businessman Jürgen Fenek, who had close ties to high-ranking government officials, was the mastermind behind the assassination.
Fenek, who was awaiting trial for conspiracy to commit murder, denies any responsibility.
Three people allegedly detonated the bomb were arrested in December 2017. One of them pleaded guilty as part of a court settlement and is serving a 15-year prison sentence. The other two are awaiting trial.
The investigation, conducted by an incumbent judge and two retired judges, and which included testimonies from police, government officials, Caruana Galicia’s family and journalists, among others, concluded that at the time it had been created by top echelons of government a ‘culture of impunity’.
“The tentacles of impunity were then extended to others regulators and to police, leading to a collapse of the rule of law“, Said the report of the committee, which was made public today by the Prime Minister Robert Ambela.
He stated that the state failed to recognize the real and immediate dangers to the life of Caruana Galicia and failed take responsible steps to prevent them.
It was clear, the report said, that the murder was either inherently or directly linked to the research study of Caruana Galicia.
It is recalled that the former prime minister Joseph Muscat resigned in January 2020 following Fenek’s arrest. He was never charged in the case. The media later revealed close ties between Fenek, ministers and high-ranking police officials.
The judges called for immediate action and the settlement of the relationships between politicians and big business.
Ambela said in a tweet that the report required a “mature” and objective analysis. “We have to take lessons too reforms to continue with greater determination, “he said without elaborating.
