Man arrested 13 years after committing femicide in Rio de Janeiro

“The arrest represents a victory, but the fight against violence and justice continues, especially for relatives of victims such as Maria, who, unfortunately, left a 14 -year -old son,” said Deputy Ângelo Lages.

Alarming numbers show increased femicide

According to a study released by CNN in at least 2024 13 women were victims of violence every 24 hours in the nine states analyzed.

In Rio de Janeiro, the numbers are also alarming, with 633 victims of violence, including 63 cases of femicide. In total, 4,181 women victims of violence were recorded, representing an increase of 12.4% compared to 2023. From all cases, 75.3% of crimes were committed by people close to the victims. When considering only partners and former partners, this rate rises to 70%.

These data are part of the survey conducted in the states of Amazonas, Bahia, Ceará, Maranhão, Pará, Pernambuco, Piauí, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

The study, entitled “They live: a path of struggle”, was produced by the Security Observatory Network, an initiative of the Center for Security and Citizenship Studies (CESEC), which is dedicated to monitoring public security policies and the analysis of the phenomena of violence and crime in these states.
