Man arrested after sexually harassing woman on SP train

A 27-year-old man was arrested in the act after sexually harassing a passenger on Line 11-Coral of the São Paulo train. The incident took place in the late afternoon of Saturday (7).

According to a note from Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (CPTM), a passenger asked the security teams for help after being harassed inside the wagon. Some passengers even witnessed the harassment and “there was a principle of aggression towards the individual”, said CPTM.

The man was taken to the 24th DP of Ponte Rasa, where a report of sexual harassment was registered.

The Secretary of Public Security said in a statement that the man remains “at the disposal of Justice” for presentation in a custody hearing.

THE sexual harassment law, of 2018, classifies as a crime “practicing against someone and without their consent a libidinous act with the aim of satisfying one’s own lust or that of a third party”. The penalty is imprisonment from 1 to 5 years if there is no more serious fact with the complaint.

CPTM also confirmed that 29 stations have a separate reception space for women who have been harassed in the vicinity of the trains.

“Support is provided away from the aggressor and provided by a person prepared to deal with the situation. In addition, the expansion of this support network further increases the capacity to assist women victims of these crimes that need to be eliminated not only from the CPTM, but from the whole of society”, concluded the company.
