Man arrested after taking girlfriend hostage in northern Rio

A man was arrested on Monday afternoon (22), after holding his girlfriend hostage inside an apartment on Rua Barão de Mesquita, in Tijuca, north of Rio de Janeiro. According to information from the Military Police, he did not accept the end of the relationship.

Military police officers from the 6th Military Police Battalion were called and negotiated with the suspect, who was not identified. After work, the agents managed to free the victim and arrest the man.

He was taken to the 19th DP (Tijuca), where the case was registered. The police seized the knife used by the suspect to threaten the victim. The man already had convictions for crimes of violence against women and failure to comply with a protective measure.

Violence against women

According to the bulletin Elas Vivem, from the Security Observatory Network, at least 586 women were victims of feminicide, which is when the victim is killed based on gender, in 2023. The data covers eight Brazilian states: São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Bahia, Pernambuco, Pará, Piauí, Maranhão and Ceará. This corresponds to one case every 15 hours.

In 72.70% of these cases, the criminal was the victim's partner or ex-partner. In 38.12% of crimes, the killer was armed with bladed weapons and, in 23.75%, with firearms.
