Man arrested for committing scams on housing program properties in Amazonas

In a joint operation, the Civil Police of Amazonas (PC-AM), through the 12th Integrated Police District (DIP), managed to arrest Jorge Luiz Vieira Maciel, 36, this Tuesday (10). The hThe man is accused of carrying out one of the biggest scams, deceiving more than a thousand people in a scheme that promised to facilitate access to properties in a state government housing program .

The fraudster’s modus operandi was simple but effective. Posing as an influential lawyer, Maciel promised to speed up the process of financing apartments for low-income families in exchange for payments ranging from R$250 to R$400.

“He claimed to have privileged contacts in an agency responsible for the state’s housing policy, gaining the victims’ trust,” explains delegate Wenceslan de Queiroz, head of the 12th DIP.

To give more credibility to the scheme, Maciel enlisted the help of a network of intermediaries who recruited victims and collected the money. Payments were made via Pix and forwarded directly to the leader of the criminal organization. It is estimated that the losses caused to those scammed exceeded R$100,000.

Arrest and investigations

Jorge Luiz was arrested at his home in the Redenção neighborhood, in the west-central area of ​​Manaus. With the preventive arrest warrant, the civil police officers complied with the court order and arrested the fraudster.

“The victims began to suspect that they were victims of a scam when the promised deadlines for the delivery of the apartments expired without any result,” reported the delegate.

The police authority states that investigations continue, with the aim of identifying and arresting others involved in the criminal scheme.

“We will not rest until all those responsible are held accountable for their actions,” said Delegate Wenceslan.

Jorge Luiz Vieira Maciel will be charged with fraud and will be held at the disposal of the courts. The crime is provided for in article 171 of the Penal Code, with a prison sentence of between one and five years, in addition to a fine.
