A man was arrested red-handed this Wednesday (22) in an operation by the Rio Civil Police against a company that sold meat unfit for consumption. The food was submerged in the floods that hit Rio Grande do Sul, in April 2024, and left more than 200 people dead.
Civil police officers from the Consumer Police Station (Decon) also carried out eight search and seizure warrants at addresses linked to those investigated in Três Rios, a municipality in the Central-South Region of Rio de Janeiro.
Operation Carne Fraca also carries out investigations at the company’s operational headquarters, also in Três Rios, to inspect stocks and the administrative area and collect goods unsuitable for consumption.
The investigations indicate that the partners of the investigated establishment acquired 800 tons of spoiled beef (prime cuts), which was submerged for many days in Porto Alegre. They claimed that the intention was to manufacture animal feed. However, the group sold the meat to other companies, making a profit of more than 1,000% and putting consumers across Brazil at risk.
Those under investigation may be held liable for the crimes of criminal association, reception, adulteration and corruption of food, which cover the entire country.
The investigations began in May last year and had the support of Decon do Rio Grande do Sul.
