Man arrested in SP for involvement in international trafficking of precious stones

A man was arrested by the Military Police in the center of São Paulo last Thursday (10) on suspicion of participating in an international precious stones trafficking scheme.

According to the Public Security Secretariat, the man, who was already a fugitive from justice, is involved in a scheme to cut precious stones from mining sites in Colombia. He was approached during a patrol on Avenida Rio Branco.

During the approach, the agents found four precious stones, including an emerald, as well as portions of marijuana. The fugitive took the teams to a hotel where he was staying. At the scene, there were two cell phones and another 45 emeralds, totaling almost a kilo of jewelry.

The stones, valued between R$600,000 and R$1 million, were seized and the material was sent to forensics, along with the other items.

According to the SSP, during the approach the man even tried to bribe one of the police officers, offering emeralds to be released.

The agents also discovered that the suspect had a warrant for his arrest, with criminal records for drug trafficking, theft, embezzlement and criminal association.

Investigations showed that the jewelry was processed in São Paulo and resold throughout the country. The case was forwarded to the Federal Police, where the incident was registered.
