A 49-year-old man was indicted this week for mistreatment by the Tocantins Civil Police. He was arrested last year after whipping a dog that had urinated on the wheel of his car.
Even though he was arrested in the act in 2023, the man was released after undergoing a custody hearing.
The penalty for mistreating domestic animals such as dogs and cats can be up to five years in prison and a fine.
Police chief Fellipe Crivelaro, head of the 33rd police station in Nova Olinda, highlighted the seriousness of the case and the negative repercussions on the city. “This is a barbaric crime that caused a lot of pain to the animal and outrage among the population,” he said.
