A man has died after a tree fell on his home in Harris County, Houston, Texas, during Hurricane Beryl’s passage through the United States.
The phenomenon generates heavy rains and hurricane-force winds, according to local police.
“Tragic!” the Harris County Sheriff said in a social media post.
“A tree fell on a house and a man was trapped under debris. Preliminary information indicates that one person has been confirmed dead. Firefighters are on the scene,” police said.
According to Gonzalez, the 53-year-old man was sitting in the house with his family when an oak tree fell on the roof, causing the structure to collapse.
The man’s wife and children were not injured, the sheriff said.
A CNN contacted Gonzalez’s office for more information.
Millions without power
More than two million people are without power across Texas as Hurricane Beryl makes its way toward Houston, according to the website poweroutages.us.
Services have ground to a halt in Houston, with public transportation suspended until further notice and many hospitals canceling elective surgeries.
Beryl is sweeping through the interior of the state, bringing storm surges and winds of over 75 mph.
Houston-area utility provider Centerpoint Energy reports that more than 1.5 million of those customers are in the Houston area.
