Four years ago, Abel Menezes tries to resolve an unusual mistake that changed the course of his life. Single, he found that, legally, is married – and with his own sister -in -law .
The surprise came when Abel tried to issue the duplicate of the birth certificate in a registry office in Bahia. “They said I had a spouse. I said I was never married. That’s when the whole pilgrimage started,” says Abel.
In the official system there is a wedding of his with Fábia Almeida, housekeeper who is actually married since November 14, 2012 with his brother, Acel Menezes. The couple’s correct marriage certificate exists and was issued at the time. It is believed that the error occurred during the registration of the marriage in the notary, confusing the name of the groom.
“We were registered in the same registry. I, Acel, was born on August 15, 1986, and Abel was born on August 16, 1985. The names are similar, it may have been that,” explains Acel.
The confusion generated embarrassment. “People make heavy jokes. They said, ‘Look at the married woman with the two brothers’ or called ‘Dona Flor and her two husbands’. We took it in the sports so as not to get confusion, but it bothers,” he says.

Currently, Acel and Fábia live in the metropolitan region of Salvador and need to travel about 170 km to Serrinha, where the wedding was recorded. Already Abel lives in Juazeiro, about 380 km from the city.
Since 2021, the family says it has made more than 50 visits to the Forum and the Serrinha Registry, facing a lot of bureaucracy. “We asked for relatives to go to the registry, but they demanded our presence. When we went, the judge, who serves three counties, could not receive us. At other times, they said that only the starting judge could find a way out. And we were also pushed between notary and justice,” says Acel.
Faced with difficulty, the brothers decided to appeal to court. “Two months ago I looked for a lawyer, because I can not issue my birth certificate or take another RG. This is disturbing my professional growth, because I need the correct documentation to have access to the certificate of a vocational course. I feel financially and emotionally harmed,” says Abel.
The report sought the Bahia Court of Justice (TJBA), but until the publication of this matter obtained no response.
