Authorities say they have solved a 44-year-old cold case in Boston after an Oregon man walked into an FBI office and confessed to killing and raping a woman in 1979.
John Michael Irmer, 68, was indicted in a Boston courtroom Monday and accused of murdering 24-year-old Susan Marcia Rose on Oct. 30, 1979, according to a news release from the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.
In August, Irmer walked into an FBI field office in Portland, where he revealed to agents that he met a red-haired woman at a Boston skating rink around Halloween in 1979 and killed her.
Irmer revealed that they entered number 285, Beacon Street, a building under renovation at the time, took a hammer and hit the woman in the head. He told FBI agents that he raped her after she died.
After the admission, authorities were able to confirm that Rose, who had red hair, was found murdered on Beacon Street, a historic thoroughfare near the city center. Her cause of death was believed to be multiple blunt force injuries to the head, with skull fractures and lacerations to the brain.
The office cited that investigators were able to compare a DNA sample from Irmer with samples collected at the crime scene.
Another man was tried and found not guilty of Rose’s 1981 murder, the news release stated. No information was immediately available about the previous case.
During Monday’s arraignment, Assistant District Attorney John Verner revealed that while Irmer confessed to Rose’s murder, he also admitted to committing another murder in a southern state. Verner said authorities were investigating the admission.
Additionally, Verner stated that Irmer told police he served “about 30 years” in prison for another murder in California.
Attorney Steven J. Sack, who represented Irmer in court, stated that he does not contest bail. He said Irmer went to court “without a fight to face these charges.”
Irmer is in custody and currently being held without bail.
“Almost 44 years after losing her at such a young age, Susan Marcia Rose’s family and friends will finally have some answers,” said District Attorney Kevin Hayden in a statement.
“This was a brutal and bloody murder, made worse by the fact that one person was accused and tried – and, thankfully, found innocent – while the real killer has remained silent until now. No matter how cold cases are resolved, it is always the answers that are important to those who have lived with grief and loss and so many distressing questions,” he continued.
The Suffolk County Prosecutor’s Office told CNN who will not comment on Irmer’s case at this time.
