Man has died from an overdose of vitamin D supplement he had been taking for months

A man passed away from taking too much of a supplement vitamin D which he had been receiving for at least nine months, resulting in show the opposite resultsfrom those that the pill promised.

The incident occurred in Britain and victim is 89-year-old David Mitchenerwho received this particular vitamin, because it promotes the absorption of calcium in the intestine and allows the normal mineralization of bones.

Thus, excessive consumption led to hypercalcemia, meaning the calcium levels in the blood were too high. This resulted in, yes weaken the bones, instead of strengthening themwhile caused kidney and heart problem. So he was admitted to the hospital with heart and kidney failure, while he died 10 days later, according to a publication of Business Insider.

THE Coroner Jonathan Stevens who examined the man's body, reported an overdose of vitamin D, because there was no warning on the packaging about the possible side effects, in case someone takes too much.

“Vitamin supplements can have potentially very serious risks and side effects when taken in excess,” he said, noting that
“in my opinion, there is a risk that future deaths will occur if action is not taken.”

It is recalled that the US National Institutes of Health suggest as upper limit per age group the following dosages:

  • 0-6 months: 25 micrograms (1,000 IU)
  • 7-12 months: 38 micrograms (1,500 IU)
  • 1-3 years: 63 micrograms (2,500 IU)
  • 4-8 years: 75 micrograms (3,000 IU)
  • 9 years and older: 100 micrograms (4,000 IU)
