A British man planning an attack on an air base in northern England with a homely bomb using explosives taken from fireworks was sentenced to nearly 40 years in prison.
The judge who issued the sentence said that 29 -year -old Mohammad Farooq had been inspired by the Islamic State and radicalized online.
Farooq was considered guilty in July last year for preparing acts of terrorism after a judgment at Sheffield Crown Court. Prior to the trial, he had declared himself guilty for possession of explosive substance with the intention of putting lives at risk and other offenses after being arrested outside St. James Hospital in Leeds in January 2023.
Farooq was caught by police at the hospital, where he had previously worked as a nursing student, with a homemade bomb containing almost 10 kg of explosives extracted from fireworks.
Judge Bobbie Cheema-Grubb said Farooq initially targeted Raf Menwith Hill, a royal air force base in North Yorkshire, which is also used by United States forces.
“But when you realize that it would be impossible to get close enough to detonate the device beyond the well -protected perimeter, you have moved to an easier target,” the magistrate said.
Farooq was sentenced to a minimum of 37 years in prison before being considered for parole.
“Farooq came dangerously close to injuring innocent people,” said terrorism police superintendent Paul Greenwood.
