The Pernambuco Civil Police are investigating the death of a 50-year-old man who was run over and crushed by a steamroller machine while trying to cross BR-232, in Caruaru, in the state’s Agreste region.
The accident occurred last Tuesday (12) at km 127 of the highway, in a section undergoing resurfacing work where traffic is partially interrupted with the “stop and go” system.
According to the Federal Highway Police (PRF), the incident was registered and the Civil Police continues to investigate the circumstances of the accident, with the support of the Criminalistics Institute (IC) and the Legal Medical Institute (IML).
The victim was hit while trying to cross a section of the highway in the Indianópolis neighborhood, in Caruaru.
The Civil Police stated that, according to preliminary reports, the train driver was also injured in the accident and was taken to a local health unit. The identity of the victim has not yet been revealed. The PRF reported that the driver of the machine left the scene before the vehicle arrived.
The section where the accident occurred is part of a project by the Pernambuco government. In a note sent to CNN the Department of Highways (DER-PE) regretted what happened and highlighted that the location was properly marked, with signs informing the necessary precautions for pedestrians and drivers. The accident area is located on a viaduct, where, according to DER-PE, there is no pedestrian crossing, as the area is not intended for passers-by.
DER-PE clarified that, as it was a section under construction, the location was adequately marked, with signs and with the “go/stop” system in operation.
The Civil Police reported that they are continuing with investigations to clarify the details of the accident and determine who is responsible.
