A 45-year-old man was detained by the Federal Highway Police (PRF) after the seizure of R$ 142 thousand in cash, card machines and materials related to the animal game during an approach on BR-232, in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, in Grande Reef.
The police action took place last Monday (28) following a report that the driver of a pickup truck had been involved in a traffic dispute and was armed.
The PRF reported in a statement that the team located the suspect vehicle at km 16 of the highway. During the approach, although the driver appeared nervous, no weapon was found. The team discovered a backpack and a plastic bag containing cash, as well as notes, pads and banners from the animal game.
Faced with a significant amount of money without proof of legal origin, the man was taken to a police station in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, in Greater Recife. The Civil Police reported that the case was registered as “gambling”, and a police investigation was opened to investigate the situation. The driver gave a statement and is now awaiting the next steps of the process.
Is gambling a crime?
The animal game constitutes a criminal misdemeanor. Although it has been practiced for over 100 years in the country, it has never been legalized and does not generate tax revenue. Since the 1940s, it has been prohibited by law, as have other games considered “chance”.
The proposed regulation of Jogo do Bicho has been under discussion in the National Congress for more than 30 years. Approved by the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) of the Senate, the bill on gambling awaits a vote in plenary.
