Man rescued after being swept away by avalanche in Argentina

A woman died and two people were injured after being hit by an avalanche on Cerro López, in the city of Bariloche, in Argentine Patagonia, authorities from the Andean Club Rescue Commission reported. One of the rescued people spent the night with half of his body covered in snow.

The fatal victim, identified as an Irish woman, died due to the landslide, according to authorities.

During the rescue operation, rescuers found one of the tourists who was skiing on the mountain. The man showed signs of hypothermia and was immediately taken to the hospital. As night fell, the search for another person who was still missing was suspended due to weather conditions.

On Thursday (5), the third victim was rescued alive after spending the night with part of his body buried under the snow.

The 29-year-old man managed to move part of his body and make a hole in the snow to call for help.

“He was at the top of the avalanche. From where he was to where we were looking for it is more than 700 meters and a 45-degree slope. It took more than an hour to get from the base to where he was,” Martín Raffo, head of the Rescue Commission of the Andean Club of Bariloche, told CNN .

The victim was taken to hospital as he showed signs of hypothermia.

“The avalanche that occurred yesterday is grade three, that is, it is very large on the avalanche scale,” said Raffo.
