Man stabs two police officers outside South Korean president’s office complex

The incident occurred at 1:40 pm (local time, 06:20 Greek time) today when police tried to arrest a man in his 70s who was shouting outside the complex, Yonhap news agency reported.

Its Metropolitan Police Seoul confirmed the incident, but did not provide further information or comment on a possible motive for the attack outside the compound, which houses South Korea’s defense ministry in addition to the presidential office.

Images broadcast by the SBS television network showed the officers pinning a man to the ground, while a knife could be seen near him. President Yun Suk-yeol last year moved the presidential office to this complex in Seoul’s Yongsan district from the Blue House that had served as the president’s residence since 1948, reports APE-MPE.

Yun’s office has not commented on the incident, and it is unclear whether the South Korean president was in his office. Demonstrations are often held outside the compound where this presidential office is located. This year a man began stabbing passers-by in a town near Seoul, injuring 14 peoplejust days after another knife attack in the South Korean capital.
