The defendant accused of four qualified homicides and five attempted homicides in a daycare center in Santa Catarina will be tried starting this Thursday (29), by a Popular Jury, in the district of Blumenau (SC).
In April 2023, he broke into a daycare center in the municipality of Blumenau and, using an axe, committed the crimes. Among the victims were three boys and one girl, aged 5 to 7. All of the children killed were only children.
The commander of the Military Police of Blumenau, declared to CNN at the time of the events, that the man jumped over the wall of the daycare center, when around 40 children were there. The victims were playing in the playground when the attacker began to strike them with a hatchet, randomly.
According to the PM, the attacker walked away from the scene and turned himself in to the 10th BPM guard, where he was arrested and taken to the Civil Police.
Information provided by the Criminal Investigation Division (DIC) of Blumenau indicates that the perpetrator of the crime had been using drugs for some time and was experiencing hallucinations.
About the trial
The session will be presided over by the judge of the 2nd Criminal Court, will begin at 8 am, with no end date set, at the Central Forum of the Blumenau district.
A strict security scheme will be implemented in the vicinity and inside the courthouse. The street in front of the courthouse will be temporarily closed at the beginning of the jury trial. During the trial, traffic will be allowed, but it will be closed again at the end of the trial, including to the press.
The trial will take into account qualifying actions that include vile motive, cruel means, use of a resource that made it difficult for the victims to defend themselves and crime against minors under 14 years of age.
The case is being processed in secret due to the victims being under eighteen years of age. By editorial decision, the CNN does not display the photo or name of the person responsible for the attack in Blumenau.
