Man who killed Taylor Swift fan during robbery sentenced to 33 years in prison

The Rio de Janeiro Court sentenced Anderson Henriques Brandão to 33 years in prison for the murder of student Gabriel Mongenot, aged 25, in Copacabana, Rio.

A native of Mato Grosso do Sul, Gabriel was in Rio with a group of friends to watch a concert by singer Taylor Swift, and was killed on November 19, 2023.

The decision is made by judge Daniel Werneck Cotta.

Also accused of participating in the crime, Jonathan Batista Barbosa, aged 37, was acquitted and had his preventive detention revoked.

The crime

Gabriel was an Aeronautical Engineering student at a university in Belo Horizonte (MG). He arrived in the capital of Rio de Janeiro two days before the incident. According to family members, Gabriel and his friends were going to enjoy the tourist attractions in Rio de Janeiro before going to the show, which took place on the 19th.

In the early hours of the same day, Gabriel was approached by criminals on Copacabana beach and, during the robbery, he was stabbed and died.

Anderson Henriques Brandão confessed to participating in the robbery at the Capital Homicide Division (DHC). According to the police, he already had 14 criminal records.
