A 40-year-old man, a fugitive from Brazilian justice, was arrested in Belgium as a result of a Red Notice (international alert from Interpol) and an Extradition Request, instituted by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Minas Gerais (MPMG), through the 2nd Public Prosecutor’s Office of Inhapim, in the Vale do Rio Doce, in Minas Gerais.
According to the MPMG, he was reported to the courts for bodily harm and torture of stepchildren . According to investigations, the violence against the children occurred in the house where they lived with the suspect and his mother, in the center of Inhapim, a city of 25,000 inhabitants, in the Vale do Rio Doce in Minas Gerais.
According to a complaint filed by the MPMG, in 2019, the fugitive “subjected minors under his care, using violence and serious threats, to intense physical or mental suffering, as a way of applying personal punishment”.
According to the Public Prosecutor Jonas Junio Linhares Costa Monteiro, responsible for the Red Diffusion request the arrest represents a victory for Justice, for the fight against impunity and serious crimes committed in the district of Inhapim, in Minas Gerais.
The arrest is the result of a joint action between the MPMG, the Ministry of Justice, the Federal Police of Minas Gerais represented by Interpol in Brazil, delegate Fatima Zulmira Basalo -, and the Civil Police of the State of Minas Gerais – through the Civil Police delegate Guilherme Lincoln Rocha Pereira and the Police investigator Agripa Anacleto de Sá. The case is being processed in the 2nd Criminal Court of Inhapim. If convicted, the man could serve from two to 11 years in prison in a closed regime.
He remains in provisional detention in Belgium while awaiting extradition to Brazil.
