Man with guns arrested near Donald Trump rally in California

A man believed to be in possession of several weapons was arrested Saturday near Trump’s rally in Coachella, California, authorities said.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said the 49-year-old man was in a car at a checkpoint near the campaign event.

Investigators noted that he had illegal weapons, including a loaded pistol, a shotgun and a high-capacity magazine.

“[O suspeito] was taken into custody without incident and subsequently booked into the John J. Benoit Detention Center for possession of a loaded firearm and possession of a high-capacity magazine,” a statement said.

The sheriff’s office added that the “incident did not impact the safety of former President Trump or event attendees.”

The suspect was detained, but paid bail of US$5,000 and was later released.

Authorities are investigating the case and have not said whether they are treating it as a possible attempted murder.

THE CNN has contacted the Trump campaign and the US Secret Service and is awaiting feedback.

Assassination attempts against Trump

Donald Trump suffered an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July this year. The Republican suffered an ear wound, and the shooter was killed.

Months later, in September, an alleged second assassination attempt against the former president was reported. The Secret Service arrested a man who allegedly hid with a rifle on Trump’s golf course.
