Health workers and “high-risk areas where there is overcrowding” should make the boost to Covid-19 vaccine by Feb. 1, California Gov. Gavin Newsom said today as part of measures being taken to to stop the spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.
On September 30, state authorities ordered the medical staff to be fully vaccinated. Employees could apply for exemption for medical or religious reasons.
Those who have not yet taken the booster dose will be tested for Covid-19 twice a week until February 1, the governor said in a statement.
Newsom is expected to give a press conference later to discuss the new measures.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), California, the most populous state in the United States, exceeds the national average in terms of the percentage of fully vaccinated, with 65.5%. However, less than 30% of the population has taken the booster dose to date.
The governor also announced that all students, from kindergarten to the last grade of high school, will be provided with free rapid tests which they will have to take before returning to school from winter break. The opening hours of the state examination centers will also be extended.
