Måneskin: “We are rebels, but we are not stupid”

“Shut up and good” they have never been, but not even “stupid”, as they themselves underline at the press conference for the presentation of Theater of Wrath – Vol.I, their latest album to be released on March 19th two years after the debut of The dance of life, double platinum certified. They are the Moonlight who, after winning the 71st Sanremo Festival, are ready not only to return with a new project, but also to represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest on May 22 in Rotterdam.

As is well known, the group, however, had to reduce the length of the piece Shut up and good three minutes and replace all swear words in order to participate in the competition, under penalty of expulsion: “It’s not something that pleased us, but it’s common sense. If we hadn’t changed the words, they would have disqualified us: we thought it was more important to participate rather than keep a “dick” that leaves the time it finds, also because we didn’t upset the meaning of the song. We are rebels, but we are not stupid »explains Damiano in connection with Zoom.

“Eurovision is a way to open up to a wider audience, but there is a regulation to respect: it would have been a bit silly to get us eliminated for this “ Victoria intervenes, happy to announce a project, that of Theater of Wrath – Vol.I, which will allow the Måneskin to lay the foundations for a “revolution” that they will try to tell throughout the year: “We have decided to call it Theater of wrath to create a contrast between the theater, that is the location, and the anger, which is the subject, to make it clear how our anger, anger and impetus are to be placed in a context in which there is the possibility to transform them into something positive »explain the Måneskin almost in chorus. “Ours is not destructive anger, but cathartic, because it tries to change things: something that, in our small way, we are also trying to do” says Damiano, giving the floor to Thomas and Ethan. “Our goal came following a maturation after many concerts: we let ourselves be influenced a lot, we understood that our most natural form is in live shows” they explain. “On the first album we were younger, it wasn’t so clear what fully represented us. In recent years, studying on a personal level, we have understood that we wanted to obtain the crudeness of the analogue, to make all the instruments heard “, Victoria continues, confirming that experimentation and that artistic maturation that is also the stylistic code of Theater of wrath.

Through songs in Italian and English and more or less veiled provocations – like the song I Wanna Be Your Slave, “That my first complaints will be worth me” jokes Damiano, since the content focuses on the sexual disinhibition that serves to describe the many facets of the human being – Måneskin look beyond, seek the sound closest to their strings and consider music as something “sacred” – we will learn this especially in the song In the name of the father -. “It is not very interesting for us to have to put ourselves in a category. It is obvious that we are not Led Zeppelin, we are just a group of 20-year-olds who write what they like. We grew up with big groups, emerging and consecrated: if they say that we are not really rock, sticazzi “intervenes Victoria who, like the other boys, explains that she is not afraid of either the dark or the emptiness (” We want to throw ourselves “).

Between a censorship on Instagram for a “risque” photo of Damiano (“Instagram is a bit behind, if I put it back they block my profile, so that’s okay”) and the desire to represent a generation that needs to free itself from certain stereotypes to ensure that the achievements of today represent the normality of tomorrow, Måneskin gloss by fighting the prejudices that accompanied their debut in music – «When we were 16 they told us’ what are you going to do? Music is not a job “” – and announcing the return to live music for the first time in the halls. The tour, organized and produced by Vivo Concerti, will be divided into 11 dates: tickets for the first four shows at the Palazzo dello Sport in Rome (14 and 15 December) and at the Mediolanum Forum in Assago (18 and 19 December) are already sold out : to these, a third concert is added at the Milan building, scheduled for March 22, 2022, plus new stages that will see the group perform on March 20 at the Unipol Arena in Casalecchio di Reno (BO), on March 26 at the PalaPartenope in Naples, on March 31 at the Nelson Mandela Forum in Florence, on April 3 at the Pala Alpitour in Turin, on April 8 at the PalaFlorio in Bari and, finally, at the Verona Arena for the grand finale scheduled for April 23, 2022.
