THE Daniel Abed Khalifi, 21 years old, who was on trial for terrorism and breaching the State Secrets Act, is believed to have escaped from Wadsworth Prison at around 8am local time. According to the Sun newspaper, citing a prison source, he came out of the kitchen and hid in the bottom of a pick-up truck making deliveries to the prison.
Police warned members of the public not to approach Khalifi, who is 1.88m tall and was wearing a white T-shirt, red and white checkered trousers and brown boots.
London’s police chief of counter-terrorism, Dominic Murphy, said a team of officers had launched “extensive and urgent” inquiries to locate and arrest Khalifa “as soon as possible”.
“I also want to reassure the public that we have no information, no reason to believe that Khalifa is a danger to the public,” he added.
Khalifa was accused of attempting to gather information during his service in the British Army “which could be of use to a person who would commit or plan an act of terrorism”. He also allegedly staged a bomb hoax by placing three wire boxes on a desk, “with the intention of causing another person to believe that the object was going to explode or catch fire.”
