Manousakis (IPTO): The energy transition requires excesses

“The development of the Transmission System by IPTO is a critical parameter for the penetration of RES in the energy mix. Through projects of domestic and international electricity interconnections, the Operator creates the conditions for a fast and successful energy transition” Manos Manousakis, President and CEO of IPTO, at the conference CEO INITIATIVE 202.

The following are key points of its placement:

IPTO is increasing and accelerating its investments

Electrical connections are a very important element of the energy transition. In this sense the Administrator must be the enabler of this effort. It is characteristic that out of the 98 projects that have been included in the new list of Projects of Common Interest of the European Union, 61 concern electrical interconnections and 6 storage projects. The United States has approved € 65 billion in funding to strengthen the country’s grids to facilitate a change in the energy mix. In Greece, IPTO has increased and accelerated its investments. The increase of the Regulated Asset Base due to the investments of the Administrator amounts today to 30% compared to 2017 and will reach 100% in the coming years.

-On the starting line the 4th Phase of interconnection of Cyclades

With the interconnection of the northern Cyclades completed, the fourth and final phase of the project begins. In the coming days we will sign the contract for the electrical interconnection of Santorini-Naxos, with a total budget of over 100 million euros. In the immediate future, tenders will start for three other islands, Folegandros, Milos, and Serifos, projects with a budget of over 300 million euros.

-The role of international connections is crucial

In order to be able to overcome the challenges of the energy transition, there must be a sense of purpose. That is where the debate over the role of international interconnections comes in, such as the initiative to transfer green energy even from North Africa. We have set up technical teams with the Managing Director of the respective Organization in Egypt in order to start the underwater interconnection study immediately. We also participate by providing technical advice on the interconnection between Crete, Cyprus and Israel in order for the SE Mediterranean as a whole to contribute to the green energy required to be imported into Europe. At the same time, the tender process for the Greek section of the second Greece-Bulgaria electrical interconnection (Nea Santa-Maritsa) is in progress and we are proceeding with the studies for the Greece-Italy reinforced underwater interconnection that we will build jointly with the Italian Administrator, Terna.
