One day after announcing his first economic measures, the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, met yesterday, in São Paulo, with bank economists.
At the end of the meeting, former Treasury Secretary Mansueto Almeida, who is now BTG’s chief economist, said that the tax reform proposal could be taken to Congress “faster than we expected”.
“The tax issue is advancing a lot. The discussions are very good.”
About the package, Mansueto said that the primary accounts could go towards a deficit of around R$ 100 billion this year, which would be “very positive” to bring down interest rates and generate an environment for growth.
Former minister Joaquim Levy spoke of “good news”. “They are looking very carefully at the next steps”, said he, currently director of strategy, economy and market relations at Safra.
Also according to participants at the meeting, in addition to reinforcing the indications given during the announcement of the first measures (which aim at reversing the deficit in the primary accounts), Haddad also reiterated the commitment to present the new fiscal framework in the first half of the year.
