Many Hindus in India revere Gandhi’s murderer

Sf History is written by the victors, it is sometimes also rewritten by a few opportunists. Thus in India, a nationalist organization, Hindu Mahasabha, gradually rehabilitates Nathuram Godse, murderer of Gandhi, relates The Guardian.

When he killed Gandhi on January 30, 1948, the murderer – hanged for his act the following year – was a member of the Hindu Mahasabha, which today continues his deadly legacy. “Godse did the right thing by killing Gandhi,” the organization’s national secretary, Devendra Pandey, said today. Nathuram Godse, who considered that India should be exclusively Hindu, “acted because Gandhi betrayed” the country, said the boss of the Hindu Mahasabha, which now has 750,000 members.

“The BJP has always hated Gandhi”

And to promote the ideas of the assassin, the organization celebrates its anniversary every year – in the month of May -, regularly erects statues in his image, tries to build temples in his name. An ambition made possible, in particular, by the arrival in power, in 2014, of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a nationalist right-wing party.

“In private, the BJP has always hated and always distrusted Gandhi and there has always been, among some of its members, a certain admiration for Godse”, explains the Indian historian Ramachandra Guha. Gandhi’s murderer was also a member of the RSS, a Hindu nationalist cultural organization considered an extremist branch of the BJP. The Guardian underlines also that, among the most eminent members of the RSS, figure Narendra Modi, who is none other than the Prime Minister of the country.
