Many Ukrainians want to be Russian citizens, says Kremlin

O Kremlin said this Tuesday (12) that Many ukrainians want become citizens russiansa day after Moscow issued a decree simplifying the rules so that citizens ukrainians get passports russians.

During a call with reporters, the spokesperson for the KremlinDmitry Peskov, said there was “no discussion” about relaunching peace talks with Kiev more than four months after Russia sent its armed forces to Ukraine.

Russia said residents of southern and eastern Ukraine occupied since February have the right to become citizens russiansa move that Ukraine and Western countries it saysto confirm that Moscow plans to retain control of these regions.

War in Ukraine shows no signs of ending, says professor

Professor of International Relations at UERJ, Mauricio Santoro, believes that the war in Ukraine “could drag on for a long time.”

In an interview with CNN Radio he assessed that “there is no sign that the conflict will end soon”, as “Russian gains were small and medium-sized cities at a high human cost to Russia.”

According to Santoro, Ukrainian data, not confirmed by Russia, show that 30,000 Russian soldiers have been killed since February. “It is something comparable to what the United States lost in Vietnam in many years of war.”

Russia’s expectation, for the professor, was that it would be a short confrontation, but it did not count on the Ukrainian army, which “learned from defeats, changed, and is now much more effective on the battlefield.”

At the moment, the conflict is concentrated in eastern Ukraine. “In Donbass, for example, the terrain is difficult for tank warfare and what we have seen in recent months is an artillery duel between Russians and Ukrainians.”

“The big bombings end up hitting civilian targets such as schools, homes and shopping malls, Ukraine pays a very high price for the war.”

Santoro analyzes that the confrontation “is lethal for both Russians and Ukrainians, and makes one wonder how long politically they can sustain a battle like this.”

The professor sees the possibility that, even if a peace treaty is signed, there will still be “pockets of conflict” in Ukrainian territory, especially in areas of greater affinity with Russia.
