Bitcoin Core developer Jonas Schnelli received a $ 96,000 grant from the mining company Marathon Patent Group to develop a software client.
The Marathon management announced that this amount will be paid monthly to the developer in Bitcoin for one year. Schnelli said he will spend these funds on further work with Bitcoin Core. Schnelli has been working on this software client since 2013, having written over 30,000 lines of code in over 750 commits, and is also involved in encryption and testing.
“This is an acceptable amount, although it is much less than the salary of an enterprise software developer. But I am interested in the development of Bitcoin, not money, ”said Shnelly.
Marathon decided to pursue this initiative after its rival Bitmain stopped funding Shnelly and fellow Bitcoin developer Joao Barbosa. After that, Barbosa received a grant from the Coinbase cryptocurrency exchange.
Marathon CEO and Chairman Merrick Okamoto believes it is important to contribute to the development of the Bitcoin network. He explained that the absence of core developers like Jonas could affect the efficiency of Bitcoin and slow down its adoption, which will negatively affect the company’s business.
Recall that six months ago, another Bitcoin Core developer Anthony Towns received a grant from the cryptocurrency investment company Paradigm. However, the amount remained unknown.
