Marco Mengoni: “My magic part”

In an intense interview with Vanity Fair on newsstands from Wednesday 8 June, Marco Mengoni talks about the importance of his roots, of how the teachings of the central people of his life have given him the strength to move forward and overcome all fears.

“There was a moment when I thought about changing course, leaving the music: I was surrounded by people I didn’t trust, I didn’t have anyone who told me the truth without filters. Then it was enough to refine the power to “read” the human beings that I inherited from my mother and grandmother, the magical part of the family.“.

“If I think of myself around the age of 20, I am very tender: I was anxious to carve out days of invisibility, leaving the house scared me, I avoided wearing sunglasses for fear that they would make me flashy and attract the gaze and judgment of the others. Today, on the other hand, in my backpack there is a book that talks about this: that you cannot please everyone », continues the artist who, with his passion for music, has always combined that for the environment. 61 records of platinum assets, Mengoni is an ambassador of a green conscience that he hopes will go viral: «For some time now the packaging of my CDs has been sustainable, the tours are zero emissions and now even waterequal. In the private sector, I endlessly reuse the plastic packaging and rigorously choose the water bottle. And if I discover in the houses of friends that the differentiated is not done in a workmanlike manner, I investigate to unmask who did it “, underlines Mengoni, whose environmental awareness has roots in childhood:” My grandfather took me to walk around Ronciglione. I still have in my head the image of him when he scolded me for throwing the chewing gum on the ground: “Either you pick it up, or I’ll put it back in your mouth” », he recalls.

The editor Simone Marchetti dedicates the editorial to the urgency of sustainability, with a reflection and an appeal for everyone to follow a path of change that can no longer be postponed: «Sustainability has to do with people. What’s more: sustainability is not just a new balance to be achieved between us and our habitat, the Earth. It is also a question of human rights, of changing jobs as we have conceived it up to now, of financial investments by public and private funds. And, finally, of actions, small or large, it does not matter, which help us to change ideas, thoughts and therefore habits and beliefs. Sustainability is understanding that we must not only realize our dreams but that we have a responsibility to make possible those of the next generation as well. It is understanding that profit is no longer just identifiable with profit but that it goes hand in hand with progress. And it is making an effort to make gestures that have never been done before and that will make us understand what to do from here on out ».
