United States Diplomacy Chief Marco Rubio arrived on Saturday (1st) to Panama on his first trip abroad. He has a scheduled visit to the channel and a meeting with Panamenho President José Raul Mulino, the first meeting between the countries since the threat of President Donald Trump to take the Panamanian channel.
Trump promised to resume the second largest interoceanic waterway in the world during his inauguration speech on January 20, falsely claiming that China the channel. He complained about the tolls, as well as the presence of Chinese and Hong Kong -based companies in Panama. Panama vehemently denied the operation to China.
The construction of the 82 km waterway was completed by the US in 1914 and, since its return to the Latin American country in 1999, has been controlled by the Panama Canal Authority, an autonomous agency supervised by the Panamanian government.
Mulino says he will not discuss the control of the channel with Rubio.
Rubio will also visit El Salvador, Costa Rica, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic, where he should discuss the trump administration’s efforts to repact migrants in the region and contain migration to the US.
